International travel is something many people dream of, but for whatever reason they have just never taken the plunge. Barriers such as language, customs and fear of illness can be intimidating for first-timer overseas vacationers. As an avid worldwide traveler, my advice is to “just do it.” Here are a few tips to help prepare you for your first global adventure.

Choose Native-Speaking Countries

First-time international travelers will be less-stressed if they choose a destination where they speak the same language. For English speakers, the British Isles, Belize and Australia are all good choices.

Get Your Passport Early

Don’t procrastinate when it comes to applying for your passport and/or any necessary travel visas. Getting them ahead of time will not only put you at ease, but may save you significant money in expedite fees.

Ask Questions

Once in country, ask questions every step of the way. Sometimes I’ll ask the same question to three or four different people just to make sure I’m getting the correct answer.

Research, Research, Research

You can’t do too much research before traveling abroad. Here are just a few things to consider:

* Do they accept US Dollars?

* What electrical voltage do they have?

* Is the crime rate an issue?

* Are any immunizations recommended or required?

* Will you need a travel visa?

* What time of year is best to travel to your intended destination?

Read Reviews

Websites like TripAdvisor allow you to read the detailed accounts of other travelers who have already experienced what you are about to do. This helps prepare you and limits unwanted surprises.

Bring a Cheat Sheet for Currency Exchange

No matter how good you are at math, foreign currency exchange rates can get confusing in the heat of vendor-purchaser negotiations. Bring along a cheat sheet that already has common amounts converted so you don’t end up paying double what you intended.

Be Prepared to Get Sick

Even if you’ll be vacationing in the developed world, the stresses of travel can still wreak havoc on your immune and/or gastrointestinal system. But don’t let that deter you from travelling – just be prepared. Bring various over-the-counter remedies with you. If you’ll be traveling in an area where water or food-borne illness is common, your doctor may also write you a prescription to take with you just in case.

If traveling internationally is something you have always dreamed about, why not finally turn that dream into reality? Do some research, make a decision, and book your trip … there’s no better time than today!
