Public transportation can be challenging if you are disabled or are a pensioner, particularly if you require extra support to help maintain a degree of independence. Fortunately, National Express is a good service to use if you are disabled or if you are a pensioner, as several concessionary fares apply to pensioners and disabled passengers. Read on to learn more about some of your travel options as a disabled or elderly passenger and some travel tips to help make your day of travel run more smoothly.

Concessionary Economy Day Return

According to National Express, a concessionary economy day return is available to persons aged 60 and above as well as to all disabled persons who are returning on the same day as travel. However, a concessionary economy day return is not valid for travel on a Friday or on other Standard fare days. Check with a sales agent for more information.

Concessionary On-the-Day Economy Day Return

A concessionary on-the-day economy day return is valid when it is purchased on the actual day of travel from a sales agent or from the bus or coach driver. This fare is available for all persons aged 60 and above (whether they are collecting their pension or not) and to all disabled persons. To qualify for a concessionary on-the-day economy day return, the outbound and return journey must commence on the same day. Friday travel is not allowed for a concessionary on-the-day economy day return ticket or on days where Standard fares are applied by National Express. Standard fare days include all Saturdays during July and August, the Thursday before the Easter Saturday before Spring Holiday, as well as the dates between Christmas and New Year.

Enjoy Cheap Travel

Concessionary fares for pensioners and disabled passengers means travelling for a lot less than other passengers, often up to half the listed ticket price, unless you travel on a Friday or another day when concessionary fares do not apply. Bring along a form of identification in case you are asked to verify your age or disability.

If you require extra support with loading a wheelchair or other mobility aids onto the bus or coach, let the sales agent know when you book your ticket and arrive in good time at the departure point on the date of travel. Then let the driver know you need extra support, so that you can board the bus or coach in more comfort and ease. With extra thought and preparation you can make the most of concessionary fares on offer from National Express.
