The winter has taken most of the East coast by storm over and over again, with snowfall totals accumulating several feet in some areas, and once again another major snow storm is expected. On Tuesday February 2nd, 2011, a major storm will likely be over most parts of the tri-state area, causing slippery and icy conditions on most roadways during the morning rush hour, and will only get worst as the day and storm progress.
As in any winter storm driving and travel of any kind can be dangerous and is not recommended unless it is an emergency, but unfortunately most of us are just the postman, now matter rain, snow, sleet, or hail, we all have a job to do. All it means to us, is that there is just more work to do, than our regular jobs. We all now the feeling, having to wake up earlier in the morning, like we get enough sleep already, just to go out and shovel some snow and clean the cars off. But it doesn’t stop there, we all have that treacherous ride to wherever we are trying to get. Don’t forget, that in most cases that is going to be the most dangerous part of our day, so we must be prepared for the worst.
Here are a few things you should have handy inside your vehicle, just incase of an emergency.
- First Aid Kit (this should be in all vehicles at all times)
2. Ice Scraper / Small Snow Shovel
3. Flashlight / Flares
4. Jumper Cables (batteries are more likely to fail in colder conditions)
5. Bottle of Anti-Freeze Windshield Washer Fluid (mixture of water and salt from roadways requires use to clean windshield more frequently)
6. Blanket
7. Bottled Water
8. Cell Phone / Cell Phone Charger (like we would ever leave without it)
9. GPS / Navigation Unit
10. This is not an actual item, but it is one of the most important things you can do. ALWAYS TELL SOMEONE WHERE YOU ARE GOING.
I know a few things may seem extreme to some people, but you never know what can happen. We all have had a moment in our lives were we wish that we had prepared ourselves better for a situation, regardless the outcome or not. Don’t let this be a time that you wish you had. SO BE PREPARED and DRIVE SAFELY!
